(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has named Bishop Salvatore Ronald Matano to head the
Diocese of Rochester, New York. He was serving as the bishop of Burlington, Vermont,
at the time of his appointment.
Bishop Matano was born in 1946 in Providence,
Rhode Island, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1971. He earned a doctorate in
canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1972, and subsequently served
in teaching and parish ministries in his home diocese of Providence, and in various
diocesan offices, including as vicar general and moderator of the curia. He also worked
in the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C.
He was ordained to the episcopate
in 2005 and served as coadjutor bishop of Burlington until November of that year,
when he began as bishop. He is a member of the Committee of Doctrine of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
