Pope updated on German bishop’s spending scandal

October 18, 2013 - Pope Francis was updated on Thursday on the latest in the scandal of a Catholic bishop in Germany who has come under fire for spending some 31 million euros ($42 million) on an ultra-luxurious residence. Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst of Limburg in western Germany has stirred anger and calls for his resignation among German Catholics and media over his lavish spending. After a private meeting with the Pope on Thursday, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, president of the German bishops conference released a statement saying that among other things they also discussed the case of Limburg Diocese. He said that the enquiry commission he set up to probe into the diocese will start its work on Friday, but did not specify details. He hoped that all sides involved in the case will have a quick and valid solution to bring the situation of the diocese of Limburg to tranquillity and find a way out of this difficult situation .
