(Vatican Radio) The Mexican international vacation resort of Acapulco has once again
been hammered by torrential rain and flooding. Acapulco and its surrounding State
of Guerrero were lashed by Tropical Storm Manuel mid-month. Now yet more belts of
rain have returned flooding some areas to a depth of more than a metre. 20,000 people
have fled to emergency shelters. The damage to infrastructure and farmland is immense.
Acapulco's International Airport re-opened on Sunday. Prior to that its ground floor
was severely flooded and the electricity power supply wasn't working. Now the principal
highway to the airport is under water, all over again. The cost of rebuilding
and repairs to damaged or destroyed buildings and homes is going to exceed millions.
And the trail of havoc from Tropical Storms Manuel and Ingrid with its flooding and
mudslides extends far and wide. Twenty four of Mexico's 31 States are affected. President
Enrique Peña Nieto is asking Congress for more funding to cope with this crisis. And
forecasters say more downpours are on their way over the weekend. Listen
