August 26, 2013 - The United Nations' human rights chief arrived in Sri Lanka on
Sunday to assess the situation before reporting to the U.N.'s rights council next
month on the government's progress in investigating alleged war crimes during the
country's civil war. During her seven-day visit to Sri Lanka, Navi Pillay will meet
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and human rights activists. She'll also visit the country's
former war zone in the north and east, where at least 40,000 civilians, mainly Tamils,
died in the final months of the conflict between the government and Tamil rebels,
which ended in 2009. The U.N Human Rights Council in March passed a resolution calling
on Sri Lanka to more thoroughly investigate alleged war crimes committed by government
troops and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. (Source: AP)
