The Christian community amidst Egypt's instability
(Vatican Radio)Egyptian security forces, moved in Wednesday to clear two camps of
supporters of the country's ousted President Mohammed Morsi. There were unconfirmed
reports by the Muslim Brotherhood that over 100 protesters were killed. The Egyptian
Health Ministry, meanwhile said that nine protesters were killed and over 80 were
injured. Authorities say the Nahda Square camp in western Cairo has now been cleared. Speaking
to Vatican Radio about how Egypt can move forward from the current situation of instability
and violence, a member of the Middle East team at Christian Solidarity World says,
“there obviously needs to be eventually unity and some sort of talks between the two
sides.”
He also says another worrying development is the rise in attacks on
the Christian community, many of which have gone largely unreported. “Since President
Morsi was deposed many Islamists have blamed Christians as being part of this conspiracy
or collusion to get rid of the Muslim Brotherhood which is not true at all”. He adds
there have been attacks on a number of Churches, 6 Christians have been killed including
a Coptic priest, as well as attacks on homes and businesses in the community. Listen
