Order of Malta hosts camp for disabled young people
(Vatican Radio) 600 young disabled people are getting the chance to participate in
a summer camp organised by the Order of Malta. The 30th edition of the camp which
is currently underway in Co Kildare in Ireland provides an opportunity for guests
to overcome personal challenges in a spirit of inclusion, friendship, spirituality
and fun. Highlighting the importance of overcoming physical barriers, the motto for
the week long event is "Yes you can". Activities include dances, visits to Irish
cultural and tourist attractions, sporting events, and arts and crafts. Speaking
to Lydia O’Kane about the initiative, Philippa Leslie, a member of the Communications
team for the Order of Malta says there are many nationalities represented at the camp.
“…we have over 20 different nationalities here this year and every man speaks his
own tongue…” Philippa also adds young people with disabilities have “a grand contribution
to make to society”. The Order of Malta in Ireland have been working for the last
3 years to make this project a reality and Communications officer Aoife Clarke says
there is great enthusiasm. “ There’s been an awful lot of excitement, an awful lot
of build up.” The Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Matthew Festing will
be attending the camp which runs to the 17 of August. Listen
