(Vatican Radio) The Government of Ecuador stresses it's outraged, following an attack
by two group of guerrillas, in which one soldier was killed. The attack happened in
the northern Ecuadorian region of Sucumbios right on the border with Colombia. An
army spokesman said troops were ambushed and shot at by two groups of rebels, who
didn't identify themselves. It's likely the gunmen are members of the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as the FARC. Five of them died during the
ensuing fire fight.
Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo PatiƱo, who says the
nation is outraged, is demanding that the Colombian Government appreciably beefs up
security with more military patrols on its side of the Border. He insists Ecuador
will defend its territory against rebels. The FARC is holding peace talks with the
Colombian Government in the neutral location of Havana, Cuba.
