Brazil to provide 'morning-after' pill for rape victims
August 07, 2013: Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff has signed legislation that allows
for the distribution of the “morning-after” pill through the national health system
for use by rape victims.
The new law, enacted just after the visit of Pope
Francis for World Youth Day, was strongly opposed by pro-life groups in Latin America.
Proponents of the bill claimed that it would cut down the number of abortions sought
by rape victims; pro-lifers replied that the pill itself can be abortifacient. (Source:
