Egypt: International diplomacy to ease tensions between opposing sides
(Vatican Radio) Senior US Senators are due to arrive in Cairo today as part of ongoing
diplomatic efforts to resolve Egypt’s political crisis. EU and US envoys have already
met officials from the military-backed government and supporters of the ousted President
Mohammad Morsi for talks on the tense situation.
Father Rafic Greiche is the
chief press spokesman for the Greek Melkite Catholic Church in Cairo. He told Susy
Hodges that many in Egypt’s Christian community are rather wary about these outside
efforts to help resolve the nation’s political paralysis.
Listen to the
interview with Father Greiche:
Father Greiche
says these foreign envoys will be “trying to find a solution” and avoid “an escalation”
of the current stand-off between the military-backed government and supporters of
the ousted President Morsi. However, he says many Egyptians are “not very happy”
about these diplomatic efforts from outside countries.
