Diocese of Jagdalpur gets new bishop


Vatican City, 16 July 2013: Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Simon Stock Palathara, CMI of India’s Jagdalpur diocese, from the pastoral governance of the diocese, according to Code of canons of Oriental Churchs number 210.
The Holy Father has appointed on Tuesday Fr Joseph Kollamparampil, CMI to be the bishop of Jagdalpur Syro-Malabar diocese in the Indian state of Chatisgarh, a Vatican communique revealed.

Fr Joseph Kollamparampil was born on 18th April 1958 at Cherpunkal, in the diocese of Palai in the Southern Indian state of Kerala. He made his vows in the Congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) on 3rd June 1979 and was ordained on 6th May 1985.

Sent to Rome for his studies, he received his doctorate in Missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. In addition to Hindi, he speaks English, Italian and German.

He has held various positions: teacher training in the house of the Congregation for the aspirants, and again, Rector of the house of formation. He served as Director of 'Nirmal' Province and as Provincial of the same until April 2011. He is currently the Rector of the CMI Mission Theologate Samanvaya in Bhopal.

The Diocese of Jagdalpur (Syro-Malabar), is in India’s Central Eastern state of Chhatisgarh, India. the diocese was elevated in 26 February 1977. It has 39,176 Square Kilometers (15,131 Square Miles). Of the 2,953,469 people, 7,869 are Catholics, which is about .3% of the total population.
