(Vatican Radio) Ireland’s parliament passed a bill yesterday to make abortion legal
for the first time in the nation’s history. The vote followed a marathon 2-day extended
debate, and saw passage by a 127-31 margin, in which the governing party invoked party
discipline. The bishops of Ireland were vocal in their opposition to the law. Bishop
Brendan Leahy of Limerick told us there is an outsetanding question of the bill’s
constitutionality. "The constitutionality of this legislation is probably in question,"
he said, adding, "I think all people in Ireland will be interested in seeing how that
