Pope receives Israeli President, hopes for resumption of peace talks
Vatican City, 30 April 2013: Pope Francis on Tuesday received Shimon Peres, President
of the State of Israel in the Vatican. The Israeli President later met with Vatican
Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, accompanied by the Secretary for Relations
with States, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti. During the cordial talks, the political
and social situation in the Middle East was addressed, where numerous conflicts persist.
Hopes were expressed for the swift resumption of negotiations between Israelis and
Palestinians so that, with courageous decisions, and willingness on both sides, as
well as with the international community's support, an agreement that respects the
legitimate aspirations of the two peoples can be reached and thus contribute decisively
to peace and stability in the region. Reference was also made to the important
question of the City of Jerusalem. Particular concern was expressed regarding the
conflict that afflicts Syria, with hopes expressed for a political solution through
reconciliation and dialogue . Matters concerning relations between the State of Israel
and the Holy See and between State Authorities and the local Catholic communities
were also addressed. Finally appreciation was expressed for the considerable progress
achieved by the Bilateral Working Commission, engaged in drafting an agreement on
issues of common interest, the rapid conclusion of which is hoped for. Source:
