(Vatican Radio) Bangladesh was a country in mourning on Thursday as flags flew at
half mast to remember those who perished when an 8 storey building collapsed on the
outskirts of the capital Dhaka the day before. Rescue workers continued their race
against time to reach those still trapped under the rubble of the complex that housed
a number of garment factories. One rescue worker at the scene, speaking through
an interpreter, told reporters there was devastation inside. “We sent two people
inside the building and we rescued at least 20 people alive”. Hospitals in the
capital were inundated with casualties with Doctors saying they were unable cope with
the number of victims.
As the death toll continued to rise on Thursday Dhaka
city development authority filed a case against the building's owner for faulty construction.
Another case was also filed against the owner and the five garments factories for
causing unlawful death. Listen to Lydia O'Kane's report
