April 02, 2013: The World Autism Awareness Day was celebrated Tuesday the 2nd
of April. The intention is to bring the world’s attention to the developmental disorder
that affects tens of millions of individuals globally. Children with autism make up
one per cent of the child population, with four out of five children diagnosed being
boys.
In his message on the occasion, the United Nations Secretary-General,
Ban Ki-moon said, this international attention is essential to address stigma, lack
of awareness and inadequate support structures. Now is the time to work for a more
inclusive society, highlight the talents of affected people and ensure opportunities
for them to realize their potential.
One world South Asia correspondent reports
that every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique
fundraising and awareness-raising events. The Day aims to increase people's awareness
about people, especially children, with autism.
The day often features educational
events for teachers, health care workers and parents, as well as exhibitions showcasing
work created by children with autism.
