(Vatican Radio) A new Pope who has come almost “from the ends of the earth” – that
was how the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio described himself in his first words
following his election on Wednesday as the 265th successor of St Peter.
While the Church in Argentina is celebrating the election of Pope Francis in a
very particular way, Catholics in other parts of the world are trying to discover
what gifts and talents the first Latin American pontiff will bring to the universal
Church. Fr Michel Remery is vice-secretary general of the CCEE, the Council of
European Bishops Conferences, which brings together Church leaders of over 35 countries
across the European continent. He spoke with Philippa Hitchen about his reactions
to the papal election and his hopes for the future of Pope Francis’ ministry….. Listen:
