March 16, 2013: Pope Francis on Friday went to the Pius XI clinic in Rome to visit
Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mejia, archivist and librarian emeritus of Holy Roman Church.
Cardinal Mejia had fallen ill recently. The staff, those being cared for, and the
visitors to the clinic were surprised to see the new Pontiff. Arriving at the clinic,
he was greeted with a lengthy round of applause. Earlier on Friday, during his
meeting with the cardinals in the Clementine Hall, Pope Francis had reported that
on Wednesday Cardinal Mejia had a heart attack and was admitted to Pius XI. Then he
added, “but it is believed that his health is stable, and he has sent his greetings.”
