Papal Election: Surprise and Joy

(Vatican Radio) People here in Italy and around the world have been reacting to the election of Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to the Papacy. Pope Francis is Latin America’s first Pope and his election was met with great surprise but also joy in St Peter’s Square.
Lydia O’Kane was in the square for the election and spoke to Kishore Jayabalan, director of the Acton Institute's Rome office.
He says the choice was a surprise for many, but that the new Pope Francis showed great humility on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.
“I don’t think that people really expected that Cardinal Bergoglio would be elected Pope and you could sense that, it was very quiet in the Piazza…Of course the great sign of humility that he had and of great concern for prayer, he asked for our prayers for him after he asked for those for the Bishop Emeritus of Rome, Pope Benedict… So it’s a great moment for the Church.
