(Vatican Radio) People here in Italy and around the world have been reacting to the
election of Argentinean Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to the Papacy. Pope Francis is Latin
America’s first Pope and his election was met with great surprise but also joy in
St Peter’s Square. Lydia O’Kane was in the square for the election and spoke to
Kishore Jayabalan, director of the Acton Institute's Rome office. He says the choice
was a surprise for many, but that the new Pope Francis showed great humility on the
balcony of St Peter’s Basilica. “I don’t think that people really expected that
Cardinal Bergoglio would be elected Pope and you could sense that, it was very quiet
in the Piazza…Of course the great sign of humility that he had and of great concern
for prayer, he asked for our prayers for him after he asked for those for the Bishop
Emeritus of Rome, Pope Benedict… So it’s a great moment for the Church. Listen
