(Vatican Radio) A new era is dawning in Venezuela, following the passing of President
Hugo Chavez.
In spite of the ever lingering spectre of cancer, Hugo Chavez
won re-election in October. But he was never again well enough to take the oath of
office, and be inaugurated for another term. It wasn't meant to be.
Back then,
Venezuela's Supreme Court circumvented the law , by announcing that Inauguration
could wait until Chavez was well enough.
Now, the Constitution MUST be followed
to the letter, and a Presidential Election must be held within thirty days.
Vice
President Nicolas Maduro, who Chavez belatedly hand picked as his successor will be
the Candidate of the ruling PSUV Socialist Party. Henrique Capriles, who lost October's
Election to Chavez, but put up good showing, hasn't yet announced if he'll be the
official opposition Candidate. He has called for strict adherence to the Constitution.
Hugo
Chavez was the political glue which held together the anti US alliance of the left
throughout a broad swathe of Latin America.
No one knows whether that cohesive
thorn in the side of Washington will continue to pierce and discomfort this backyard
zone.
