Justin Welby confirmed as Archbishop of Canterbury
In London on Monday, the former Anglican bishop of Durham, Justin Welby, was officially
confirmed as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. Following his appointment to the post
last November, Welby was formally elected in January by the Dean and Canons of Canterbury
Cathedral, where he’ll be enthroned next month in a ceremony marking the public inauguration
of his ministry. Sean Patrick Lovett reports:
Listen:
The new Archbishop
of Canterbury has formally taken up his post as the leader of the world's 80-million-strong
Anglican Communion.
During yesterday’s service in London’s St Paul’s Cathedral,
the Most Reverend Justin Welby swore allegiance to Britain’s Queen Elisabeth as he
accepted the position of Archbishop of Canterbury.
The 57 year old Archbishop
Welby, a former oil executive, succeeds the Rev Dr Rowan Williams, who retired after
a decade in office. He will be officially installed in Canterbury Cathedral on March
21st.
