Prophet of unity, builder of bridges: Fr Paul Wattson
(Vatican Radio) He’s known as the father of Christian Unity week which takes places
in the northern hemisphere between January 18th and 25th each
year, a reminder of the need for building bridges between divided Christian communities.
He’s also a founding father of CNEWA, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and
the inspiration behind another missionary charity known as ‘The Union that nothing
be lost’.
His name is Fr Paul Wattson, co-founder of the Franciscan Society
of the Atonement, based today in Garrison, New York, where his brothers and sisters
continue to focus on justice, peace and ecumenical work. On January 16th
this year, the friars and sisters marked the 150th anniversary of the birth
of Fr Paul, celebrating his prophetic passion for Christian Unity – as Philippa Hitchen
found out when she spoke with the Minister General of the order and director of Rome’s
Centro Pro Union, Fr James Puglisi
