Christian is a man of joy: Card. Bertone in Sardinia
December 15, 2012: "Pope Benedict XVI, during his visit to Sardinia, has the task
of giving birth to" a new generation of committed lay Christians, capable of seeking
with competency and moral rigor solutions of sustainable development", read a message
issued by the Sardinian bishops on the occasion of the visit of Vatican’s Secretary
of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. They said the Cardinal’s visit to Sardinia confirms
the proximity of the Church in the world of work.
While speaking at the welcome
ceremony on Saturday, Cardinal Bertone said that his visit is to show the particular
closeness of the Holy Father to the world of work in this time of economic crisis.
The Christmas season then makes us more attentive to the trepidation of many families. ‘What
we are here today to Portovesme, Sardinia, is a sign of hope. Bless and inaugurate
new production facilities constitutes an encouraging development for the property,
for leadership and for all workers’, the Cardinal added.
The Church's social
teaching does not offer recipes, but it certainly offers valuable ethical criteria
and a method for dealing with problems. Indicates the path of justice in solidarity
- how can we forget the teachings of Blessed John Paul II, so full of personal involvement?,
Cardinal Bertone asked.
The social doctrine of utmost account of human labor,
and strongly reaffirms the Holy Father Benedict XVI in his message, just released,
for the next World Day of Peace. In particular, the work remains the priority for
Italy. Today the conditions for work are particularly difficult, and this makes it
even more important to the training of young people, to enable them to make choices
of work and family life.
Later, in his homily, Cardinal Bertone, said
‘we are defendants in the unusual location of an industrial plant for the celebration
of the Eucharist. We are not in a church of stone, but in a church made up of people,
workers and their families. The inauguration of the new plant has a religious, social
and civil significance. Conveying the blessing of the Holy Father to the workers
and their families, the Cardinal said that the Third Sunday of Advent has a festive
connotation - joy, hope and charity.
The Christian is a man of joy. It makes
no sense of a Christian to be sad. The reason for this joy is Christ himself. Hope
is a virtue that is experiencing a decline in times of crisis, in passing, in which
reformulate value horizons. It is important that any new tagline that the company
can offer is not only new, but more influential in safeguarding the dignity of every
human person. Finally, we emphasize the centrality of Christian charity in every corner
of our lives. The season of Advent, always puts in evidence the charity, especially
as a virtue essential to cooperate in the building of God's Kingdom. How do you combine
charity with the work and the demands of justice? It is done by recognizing values,
motivate action, distinguish means from ends, facing an integral vision of development,
promote justice choices that promote the true good of man, the Cardinal added.
