(Vatican Radio) In the UK, a just-released survey shows that more than half of churchgoing
Catholics do NOT read the Bible week-by-week outside of a Church setting. So, how
can the Church encourage more Catholics to pray with, know and use their Bible each
day? That's one of the key aims behind Catholic Bible Sunday which is held on the
Second Sunday of Advent each year by the Catholic Bishops' conference in England and
Wales. In support of this aim, the Bishops have become active Twitter users in the
hope that this social networking tool will help encourage the faithful to read the
Bible and the Second Vatican Council documents. To find out more, Vatican Radio's
Susy Hodges spoke to Father Adrian Graffy, Chair of the Church's National Scripture
Working Group.
Listen to the extended interview with Father Graffy:
Father Graffy
says during this Year of Faith we are "rediscovering the teaching of the Second Vatican
Council and one of its key documents was Dei Verbum which I think fundamentally
was saying the Scriptures are for all." He goes on to say that as part of this ongoing
process "we need to rediscover, come to love and come to understand the Scriptures
better."
Asked what are some of his favourite passages in the Bible, Father
Graffy points to St. Mark's Gospel which he describes as one of the foundations of
our faith "in it's presentation of Jesus" and in revealing "the essence of God's love."
