(Vatican Radio) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed bishop Murray Chatlain, Archbishop
of Keewatin-Le Pas, Canada. He will take over from Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie who
retired July last.
Archbishop Chatlain was formerly bishop of Mackenzie-Fort
Smith, and has been appointed Apostolic Administrator sede vacante et ad nutum
Sanctae Sedis of said diocese.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 19 January
1963, Most Rev. Murray Chatlain was ordained to the priesthood in 1987. He served
a number of parishes in the Diocese of Saskatoon before ministering in the Diocese
of Mackenzie-Fort Smith, in the parishes and missions of Black Lake, Fond-du-Lac,
Stony Rapids, Uranium City, Camsell Portage and St. Patrick. Bishop Chatlain was appointed
Coadjutor Bishop of Mackenzie-Fort Smith on 23 June 2007. The Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le
Pas includes parts of the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and has
the suffragan dioceses of Churchill-Baie d'Hudson, Labrador City-Schefferville, and
the Moosonee. As of 2004, the archdiocese contains 49 parishes, 6 active diocesan
priests, 10 religious priests, and 42,000 Catholics. It also has 9 Women Religious,
and 11 Religious Brothers.
