Justice and Peace plenary on global financial governance
(Vatican Radio) The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace opens its three day plenary
assembly on Monday to discuss the theme ‘Political authority and universal jurisdiction’.
After welcoming several new members to the Council, the group will be received in
audience by Pope Benedict XVI. On Tuesday participants will hear from former director
of the International Monetary Fund, Michel Camdessus and from former under-secretary
general for legal affairs at the United Nations, Nicolas Michel, as they explore the
possibilities of global financial governance.
It’s a controversial idea which
has been raised by several popes, from Pope Paul VI to the present pontiff in his
most recent encyclical, as Philippa Hitchen discovered when she sat down with the
President of the Pontifical Justice and Peace Council, Cardinal Peter Turkson….
Listen:
"It's something
that we talked about when we came out with a note on reforming the financial crisis.....so
what is the prospect of developing such a global authority?
People have called
it unrealistic or utopian, but one thing I recognise is that it's just because what
we are calling for does not have an existing model..."
