Pope appoints bishops to Delhi, Khunti in India


November 30, 2012 - Pope Benedict XVI on Friday appointed bishops to two dioceses in north and east India. Bishop Anil Couto of Jullundur has been appointed Archbishop of Delhi. He takes over from Archbishop Vincent Concessao, who has stepped down having reached the retirement age of 75 last year. Bishop Couto was first appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi in 2000 under Archbishop Concessao, and was transferred in 2007 to head the Diocese of Jullundur. Meanwhile Archbishop Concessao was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi in 1995 and then made Archbishop of Agra in 1998. Two years later, in 2000, was appointed Archbishop of Delhi.
Meanwhile in the eastern state of Jharkhand, Auxiliary Bishop Binay Kandulna of Ranchi Archdiocese has been appointed bishop of Khunti. The seat of Khunti was vacant after its bishop Stephen Tiru passed away on March 3rd this year.
