(Nov. 28, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI has encouraged the numerous initiatives promoted
by the Church’s mission to eradicate the scourge of AIDS. The Pope made the appeal
at the end of his general audience on Wednesday, in view of World AIDS Day an initiative
of the United Nations to be observed on Saturday, December 1st. The Holy Father
told thousands gathered in Vatican’s audience hall that the disease has caused
millions of deaths and tragic human suffering , especially in the poorest regions
of the world, where many do not have access to effective medicines. He said was
particularly thinking of the large number of children, who each year are infected
by their mothers, although there are treatments to prevent it, and he encouraged the
numerous initiative promoted by the Church to eradicate this scourge.
