(Vatican Radio) Mexico's outgoing President wants to change the name of the country.
James Blears reports on more than a gesture of flag waving.
Listen:
President
Felipe Calderon, whose six year non-renewable term ends on December 1st, wants to
change the United States of Mexico, to just plain old Mexico.
The former was
adopted after Independence from Spain in 1824, and far too closely echoes the country's
giant Northern neighbour for Calderon's liking. As long ago as 2003, he tried to get
Congress to consider and then vote on the issue. They weren't interested then, and
they're not listening now.
Incoming President Enrique Peña Nieto, hasn't publically
offered an opinion about the proposed name change.
