Archdiocese of Madras Mylapore get new archbishop


(Nov. 21, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday appointed a new Archbishop to the archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore in southern India’s Tamilnadu State. Archbishop George Antonysamy, the Apostolic Nuncio in Liberia, Gambia and Sierrra Leone is the new archbishop, taking the place of retiring Archbishop A. Malayappan Chinappa . Archbishop Antonysami was born 15 Feb, 1952 in Tiruchy, Tamilnadu State. He was ordained priest 19 Nov. 1980 and consecrated bishop 8, Sept.2005 .
The archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore has an area of some 3,160 sqm and a population of about 8,222,000 people, of which Catholics number a little over 327, 000 .
