November 20, 2012: Universal Children’s Day 2012 with its theme ‘Treasure Our Children’
is celebrated on Tuesday. It was established by the United Nations in 1954 to encourage
understanding between children and promote children's welfare around the world. It
is held on 20 November, the same day the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration
of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and signed the Convention on the Rights of the
Child in 1989. On the occasion of Universal Children’s Day 2012, UN Secretary-General
Ban Ki Moon has launched a new initiative called Education First. The Initiative
aims to raise the political profile of education, strengthen the global movement to
achieve quality education and generate additional and sufficient funding through sustained
advocacy efforts. Achieving gains in education will have an impact on all the Millennium
Development Goals, from lower child and maternal mortality, to better health, higher
income and more environmentally-friendly societies.
The children's day all
over world celebrated on 20 November and regionally some places celebrated on 20 April
and in India on 14 November.
