Yours a unique vocation that requires study, sensitivity and experience, says the
Pope to Health Care Workers
November 17, 2012: Yours is a unique vocation that requires study, sensitivity and
experience, said Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday while addressing the participants of
the 27th International Conference of the Pontifical Council for Health
workers, members of the Association of Italian Catholic Doctors and European Federation
of Catholic Medical Associations.
The Pontiff also greeted the sick people
present, their families, chaplains and volunteers, members of associations, students
of the Faculty of Medicine and Bachelor of Nursing. Citing the Second Vatican Council,
Pope Benedict told the sick and the suffering: you are not "either abandoned or unnecessary"
because, united to the Cross of Christ, you are contributing to the work of salvation.’
And
with the same accents of hope, the Church also challenges health professionals and
volunteers, the Pontiff added. Those who choose to work in the world of suffering,
as a "human and spiritual mission" additional expertise is required, which goes beyond
the academic. This is the "science of Christian suffering," stated explicitly by the
Second Vatican Council, reminded the Pope. He exhorted them to be qualified experts
of this "Christian science of suffering"! Being Catholics, you are given a greater
responsibility in society and in the Church: it is a true vocation, the Pope added.
