Police in Paraguay have seized 1,700 kg of cocaine in a huge raid near the border
with Brazil.
James Blears reports on this law and order coup:
Paraguayan
Authorites say that they nipped the operation in the bud, because the vast cocaine
shipment was going to transported to neighboring Brazil. More than 20 people have
been arrested. Among them are Bolivian national and convicted drug trafficker Marco
Antonio Rocca Ali, and even more significantly Ezequiel de Souza, who's top of Paraguay's
most wanted list. Ten of those arrested are from Paraguay and they include some police
officers. Five planes have been seized and an extensive search is underway for yet
more cocaine, which could be buried or stached in the immediate area.
The
cocaine found so far, has a street value of tens of millions of dollars, and its likely
origin was Bolivia.
Paraguay's President Federico Franco, has praised the
operation, which heavily relied on covert intelligence and confirms that his country
is committed and dedicated to fighting the scourge of narcotics.
