Bahamas bishop grateful for Pope's prayers, support

Hurricane Sandy’s destructive path through the Caribbean has left more than sixty people dead. The deadly storm is expected to worsen as it approaches the East Coast of the United States, home to more than fifty million people.

Sandy has already struck the Caribbean nations of the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. On Sunday, Pope Benedict offered his prayers for those affected by the storm, and appealed for concrete aid for the victims.

Bishop Patrick Christopher Pinder of Nassau, in the Bahamas, expressed his gratitude for the Pope’s words: “I was deeply appreciative and touched by the Holy Father’s mentioning of it in the Angelus yesterday, and his mentioning of his prayers for the people of our region. I know we are deeply appreciative of that, and I thank him for it.”

Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the United States on Tuesday morning.
