Atheism increased by the discord of the Church: Bishop Warduni at the SYNOD
October 16, 2012: Atheism increased by the discord of the Church, said Bishop
Shlemon Warduni, Curia Bishop of Babylon of the Chaldeans in Iraq, at the Synod of
Bishops in Rome. He was speaking at the 12th General Congregation of the
Synod on Monday afternoon. The Synod is currently underway in the Vatican, Oct 7-28.
Bishop
Warduni said that it is a widespread mentality that despises religion, considering
it as an obstacle to social development and science. This vision leads to indifference
- a disguised form of atheism. Atheism practiced and spread in all societies, increased,
unfortunately, by the discord of the Church. A Church that is often forced to defend
themselves instead of bearing witness to Christ ... this weakens the faith of the
simple, the Prelate added.
Focusing on the New Evangelization in Iraq, Bishop
Warduni said that ‘the situation remains extremely negative, despite the constant
attempts of the Church. The number of Christians is always falling due to continuous
emigration of the faithful and the clergy and also because of our bad example, non-cohesion,
and increased divisions between us.
We must ask ourselves, he said: where is
our humility? Where is our unity? where is our real love for God, who loved us by
giving us His only begotten Son. He also warned against the negative impact of
mass media which often have discredited and weaken the moral force of the Church,
and damaged the faith of adolescents and young people.
