(Vatican Radio) Among the issues to be discussed at the 13th Ordinary General
Assembly of the Synod of Bishops Synod for "the New Evangelisation" is that of the
liturgy, which brings to mind how this event coincides with the 50th anniversary
of the Second Vatican Council.
Veronica Scarisbrick asks the Under Secretary
of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelisation, Monsignor Graham Bell, how the
Synod and the "Year of Faith", tie in with this milestone in the history of the Catholic
Church:
" The Year of Faith will be opened in Rome by the Holy Father on Thursday
11th of October, which coincides with the opening of the Second Vatican Council by
Pope John XXIII in 1962. It also coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the publication
of the Catechism of the Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
The
commmon factor which unites the Synod, the Year of Faith and the Council is precisely
the desire to renew the faith of the Church. The New Evangelisation is certainly one
of the fruits of Vatican II , as indeed is the Catechism of the Catholic Church".
