(Vatican Radio) The Archbishop of Carcas Jorge Urosa Savino has appealed to Venezuelans
to oppose all forms of violence, before during and after national elections. President
Hugo Chavez and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles have delivered their final
campaign addresses to huge crowds ahead of Sunday's vote. James Blears has this report:
Recently published
polls have incumbent Hugo Chavez, who's ruled Venezuela since 1999, ten points in
the lead. But more than eleven percent of Venezuelans have still not committed to
anyone. Main opposition candidate Henrique Capriles of the Justice First party
is a lawyer, ex Mayor, former State Governor and just forty. Hugo Chavez, who's a
former Paratroops officer is fifty eight. Immensely popular with Venezuela's poor
he's chided Capriles as a rich kid pretending to be a barrio boy. Capriles has hit
back saying he's going to better utilize and direct the country's vast resources while
moving away from allies like Iran. Chavez's health is a concern for some voters.
If elected, will he be able to complete another six year term? He's never revealed
the sort of cancer he's been suffering from. WHY? It's needed two operations in Cuba,
as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He's bravely fought it and insists
he's now cured. Will this be a significant factor when Venezuelans cast their
vote, and almost 19 million are eligible to do so. We're soon going to see!
