Pope inaugurates Synod on New Evangelization on Sunday


(October 06, 2012) Pope Benedict XVI will inaugurate the Synod of Bishops on New Evangelization on Sunday, with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The 13th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, Oct. 7-28, on the theme, “New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith" is the first major event of the upcoming Year of Faith that starts on Thursday. During Sunday’s Mass, the Pope will also declare 16th century Spanish priest and mystic, St. John of Avila, and 12th century German Benedictine abbess and mystic, St. Hildegard of Bingen, as Doctors of the Universal Church. 408 concelebrants, including cardinals, heads of eastern rite Catholic Churches, archbishops, bishops and priests will join Pope Benedict at the Mass. Among them will also be 49 archbishops and bishops of the episcopal conferences of Spain and Germany, the countries of Sts. Hildegard of Bingen and. John of Avila.
