(Sept. 26, 2012 ) The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is suggesting ten ways in
which Catholics may observe the Year of Faith, which will commemorate the fiftieth
anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary
of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Year of Faith, declared
by Pope Benedict XVI, begins on October 11 and concludes on the Solemnity of Christ
the King on 24 November 2013. The goal is to strengthen the faith of Catholics and
draw the world to the faith by good example. The ten ways the US bishops have suggested
for Catholics to observe the Year of Faith, include going to Mass and Confession;
a daily reading of the Bible, saints’ lives, the Catechism, and the documents of
the Second Vatican Council; and helping the needy, inviting others to Mass, especially
those who have drifted from the faith; volunteer at parish activities, and strive
to follow the Beatitudes, as its precisely the example of lived faith which is needed
to draw people to the Church in the year ahead.
