(Vatican Radio) One hundred and thirty two inmates of a Mexican prison bordering Texas
have tunnelled their way out. Authorities say prisoners dug a tunnel below and old
workshop at a jail in the City of Piedras Negras, in Coahuila State, which borders
Texas, and then cut perimeter wire to escape. Officials confirm 85 of these escapees,
are either accused of Federal crimes, or are serving sentences for them, after being
convicted. The Prison Warden and two of his senior colleagues have been arrested and
are being questioned. US Authorities often request the extradition of narcotics kingpins,
because Mexico's penal system tends to be lax and far from escape proof. This region
is a current battleground between the Sinaloa and the Zetas Drug cartels. Mexico's
Drug War is now into its sixth year. Authorities haven't recently provided statistics
for the death toll, which is numbered in tens of thousands.
