Renault Delivers Exclusive Electric Car to the Pope
September 06, 2012: The carmaker Renault stands alongside the Vatican to promote
a message of sustainable mobility by offering Pope Benedict XVI a 100% electric Car,
specifically designed as an individual unit for the mobility needs of the Pope.
The
vehicles were delivered to the Holy Father on Wednesday, September 5, by Carlos Ghosn,
Chairman and CEO of Renault Group, during a visit to the papal villa in Castel Gandolfo,
the summer residence of the Pope
The main vehicle, which will be used for the
mobility needs of the Pope in specific contexts as the residence of Castel Gandolfo,
is white with the papal coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI on the doors, and is an
environmentally friendly and sustainable version of the "Popemobile". The model, made
on the basis of the Kangoo Maxi ZE, has a length of 4.6 m and a width of 1.8 m. It
features an electric motor of 44 kW (60 hp), and a lithium-ion battery that provides
an average range of 170 km (NEDC combined cycle approval).
The second specimen,
the first twin is blue and yellow with white stripe down the side and is intended
for the Vatican Gendarmerie for the security services to the Pontiff. The two vehicles
were processed, compared to the basic model Kangoo Maxi ZE, in collaboration with
the French coachbuilder Gruau. These adapted versions have 4 seats, including two
individual rear seats and very comfortable. The two vehicles complement addition,
specific solutions designed to make them suitable for the uses they have been designed
from the Vatican roof and removable rear side windows for a wide open area, side doors,
rear doors and electric retractable footrests for easy access on board smooth.
Through
the gift of the two electric models to the Vatican, Renault confirms its commitment
to a more responsible development in the world of mobility, to retrieve the centrality
of man and protect the environment, through the dissemination of innovative and environmentally
friendly vehicles, such as those with 100% electric supply, zero noise and emissions
during use.
