(Vatican Radio) Pope Benedict XVI has repeatedly called on Christians to unite to
care for the Earth, and has expressed support for the Italian Church’s “Day for the
Safeguard of Creation”.
Celebrated annually on September 1, it is an event
during which parishes across Italy ask believers to reflect on ecological damage and
unite to pray for Creation.
Catholic congregations share the celebration
with the Greek Orthodox Church, which in 1990 declared its Ecclesiastical New Year,
September 1, a day dedicated to celebration and protection of the environment.
The
Church’s growing engagement in environmental issues on a variety of levels is reflected
by a variety of initiatives promoted by the Vatican, by the Dioceses and by local
parishes.
Vatican Radio’s Linda Bordoni spoke to Martina Valentini of the Greenaccord
Onlus, involved this year in organising a “Walk for journalists for the environment”
that aims to raise the attention of the media on environmental issues.
First
of all Martina explains that Greenaccord is a cultural association of Catholic inspiration
that has been involved for years in the training of journalists in matters of environmental
concern.
“Our goal is to set up meetings, create debate and foster investigation
intended to allow the press to deepen their environmental culture and awareness to
be able to communicate better to the larger public”.
These initiatives come
to life through a series of fora that involve media representatives.
Martina
explains that on Aug 31 the organization has organised the first “Walk for journalists
for the environment” in collaboration with the Dioceses of Belluno-Feltre, Trento
and Bolzano-Bressanone.
Forestification will be one of the topics discussed.
The
event will include moments of reflection and prayer within the incredible setting
of the Dolomite Mountains.
Martina says the “Walk” will include journalists
from national and regional networks. It will also involve many young people who will
be writing a blog and will be communicating through the social network so as to involve
as many people as possible.
On September 1, the Day for the Safeguard of Creation
itself, celebrations will take place across the Dolomite regions.
