Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto as the new Apostolic
Nuncio to Cyprus. The Mediterranean island nation was the site of a Papal Visit in
2010, when Pope Benedict became the first Pope in modern history to Cyprus.
Archbishop
Lazzarotto takes up his new post in addition to his duties as Apostolic Nuncio Israel
and Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine. He has previously served the Holy
See as Nuncio to Iraq and Jordan (1994-2000) and Ireland (2000-2007). His most recent
appointment was to Australia (2007-2012).
