Saint Augustine: the most quoted of spiritual writers...

(Vatican Radio ) - Of all the Fathers of the Church, Augustine is probably the most familiar. Certainly he's the most quoted.

In 396 when the aged Bishop Valerius died Augustine became Bishop of Hippo. For forty years he preached reguarly on Sunday and feastdays and frequently during the week. Although only some 1000 sermons of his remain, it has been calculated that had they all been recorded they would amount to 7 or 8.000.
