Christians’ contribution in education, health lauded
August 07, 2012: Governor of the Indian state of Rajasthan, Margaret Alva, has lauded
the contribution of Christian community in providing quality education and health
services.
“Only education can empower minorities to share the fruits of development
and play a lead role in nation building,” Alva said during a meeting with the members
of the state minority commission in Jaipur on Friday.
She said the Muslim community
too should upgrade education in madrasas rather than limit them to imparting knowledge
of Urdu language and computer skills.
A Christian herself, Alva asked the commission
to work for amity and communal harmony in the state. Expressing concern over the drought-like
situation in the state, she said, “The need of the hour is to conserve energy and
every resource possible to cope with difficult days ahead.” Alva said she herself
goes round the Raj Bhawan and switches off lights and fans in vacant rooms.
