A gunman killed six people and critically wounded three others at a Sikh temple in
Wisconsin. The suspect was a bald, white man, approximately 40 years old, and police
a treating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism. Three people were wounded,
including the first police officer to respond to emergency calls - he fired the shots
that killed the gunman.
The Police Chief in Oak Creek, John Edwards, said he
was treating the incident as an act of “domestic terrorism”.
Sikh leaders have
complained about an upsurge in harassment and discrimination since the 9-11 attacks
in 2001, since Sikhs are often confused with Muslims due to their turbans and beards.
