A United Nations human rights envoy travelled on Tuesday to western Burma to investigate
communal violence that left at least 78 dead and tens of thousands homeless. Tomas
Ojea Quintana flew to Rakhine state for a firsthand look at the cities and towns where
mass rioting and ferocious violence erupted last month between the ethnic Rakhine
Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas.
“There has been very limited access by UN
agencies to help these people who have been displaced in these different camps,” said
Mark Farmaner. Director - Burma Campaign UK. “You have a very serious human rights
problem going on with still some violence taking place in the state, mainly directed
now against the Rohingyas.”
