MaterCare International: The 91% Solution


(Vatican Radio) A 2012 World Health Organization press release reveals that 91% of maternal deaths are preventable and may be treated with essential obstetrical care.

Further analysis shows that due to lack of effective care during pregnancy and childbirth, 333,000 women die annually during pregnancy and childbirth. 99 percent of these deaths occur in developing countries and in particular in sub-Saharan Africa.

One organization that is tackling this issue head on is MaterCare International, an organization of Catholic health professionals dedicated to the care of mothers and babies, both born and unborn, through new initiatives of service, training, research and advocacy, which are designed to reduce the tragically high rates of maternal mortality, morbidity and abortion.
