Syrians grateful for Pope’s closeness

(July 30, 2012) Church leaders in Syria have expressed appreciation for Pope Benedict XVI’s appeal for an end to “all violence and bloodshed” in the West Asian nation. Apostolic Nuncio to Syria, Archbishop Mario Zenari and Melkite Archbishop Jean-Clement Jeanbart of Aleppo said Syrians are grateful to the Pope who expressed his closeness with them during his midday ‘Angelus’ prayer on Sunday at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, near Rome. Archbishop Jeanbart noted the Holy Father’s appeal was among the two most important issues reported by the local media. The prelate urged all to pray for a solution through dialogue. All the Christian communities of Aleppo have decided to come together to bring relief and aid to refugees and the suffering. Apostolic nuncio Archbishop Zenari appealed to leaders of Muslim, Christian and other communities, to come together with all moral force and authority and in the name of God make an appeal to all parties in conflict to stop the violence and repression that is dragging the country to destruction and untold suffering. Archbishop Zenari told Vatican Radio that Syrians are moved by the Pope’s continued closeness with them. He said the Pope has drawn attention to the ordeal of numerous refugees, displaced and the suffering.
