Pope Benedict XVI has sent a telegram of condolence to the President of Ghana, John
Dramani Mahama, in connection with the recent untimely death of his predecessor, John
Atta Mills, who died aged 68 this past Tuesday at a military hospital in Ghana’s capital
city, Accra, five months short of finishing his first term in office. Please find

It was with sadness that I learned of the untimely death of President John
Evans Atta Mills. Recalling his years of public service and his dedication to
democratic principles, I join you, his family, and all the people of Ghana in mourning
his passing. Entrusting the late President’s soul to the providence of Almighty God,
I pray that Ghana will be blessed with peace and prosperity as you begin your service
as President in these sad circumstances.
