Appointment: Cordileone to San Francisco

(Vatican Radio) Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Salvatore Cordileone as the new Archbishop of San Francisco.

Archbishop Cordileone was ordained to the priesthood for his home diocese of San Diego. During his years in San Diego, he served at various times as pastor, secretary to the bishop, and judicial vicar. He has also served as an official of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Segnatura in Rome. In 2002 he was named auxiliary Bishop of San Diego; seven years later, in 2009 Archbishop Cordileone was appointed to head the diocese of Oakland.

Within the US Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Cordileone is President of the "Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage" and member of the "Committee for Canonical Affairs and Church Governance". In addition, he is a member of the "Committee on Religious Liberty" in the "California Catholic Conference."

Archbishop Cordileone succeeds Archbishop George Niederauer, whose resignation on having reached the age limit, was accepted by the Holy Father.
