(Vatican Radio) Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Salvatore Cordileone as the new Archbishop
of San Francisco.
Archbishop Cordileone was ordained to the priesthood for
his home diocese of San Diego. During his years in San Diego, he served at various
times as pastor, secretary to the bishop, and judicial vicar. He has also served as
an official of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Segnatura in Rome. In 2002 he
was named auxiliary Bishop of San Diego; seven years later, in 2009 Archbishop Cordileone
was appointed to head the diocese of Oakland.
Within the US Bishops’ Conference,
Archbishop Cordileone is President of the "Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense
of Marriage" and member of the "Committee for Canonical Affairs and Church Governance".
In addition, he is a member of the "Committee on Religious Liberty" in the "California
Catholic Conference."
Archbishop Cordileone succeeds Archbishop George Niederauer,
whose resignation on having reached the age limit, was accepted by the Holy Father.
