Tribals, dalits get most justice in Madhya Pradesh
(July 09, 2012) Central India’s Madhya Pradesh state tops in the conviction rate
in cases related to crime against the weaker sections of society, making the state
where dalits and tribals are getting most justice. The state had a conviction rate
of 35.1%for crime against dalits and 33.2%for offences against tribals, according
to state police headquarters officials. The national conviction rate was 35%and 25%in
regard to the case against dalits and tribals respectively, they said. In Maharashtra
state the conviction rate in cases of crimes against Scheduled Castes is 3.9%, in
Orissa 7.9%, in Kerala 9.7%, in Bihar 11.5%, in Assam 14.3% and in Assam 15%, the
added. Similarly, the conviction rate in cases of crimes against Scheduled Tribes
is 7.3%in Andhra Pradesh, 20.9%in Orissa, 25.5%in Jharkhand, 12.2%in Bihar, 5.1%in
Karnataka and 3.7%in Maharashtra, they said. According to officials, Madhya Pradesh
government’s promptness in fighting crimes against disadvantages groups has brought
down crimes against dalits by 0.43% and against tribals by 2.87% over the previous
year.
